  1. A quick update on Joseph Burns and J.P. Smyth. On 12th January 1922, a Joseph Burns of Parkview Street was wounded during shooting in the Oldpark Road. He died on 13th January in the Mater. According to the 1911 census, he was 6 years of age, so he was 16 or 17 at the time of his death. His death doesn’t appear to be listed in Facts and Figures of the Belfast Pogrom, however it was reported in the Freeman’s Journal.
On 18th April, 1922, newspapers reported that a James Smith received a bullet to the head at an unspecified location in Belfast. His age is given as 14 but no address is included. Given the severity of the wound, he may subsequently have died and is the J.P. Smyth listed as a Fian.

  2. John,

On my list of fatalities, I have a James Smith who died on 11th May 1922, having been shot in Mayfair St in The Bone (don’t have a date for when he was shot). His death was recorded in the Newsletter, whose reporting of nationalist fatalities was a bit patchy at best; it was also reported in one of the bulletins issued by the Provisional Govt’s North East Boundary Bureau. I reckon we’re talking about the same person.

  3. Cool. That must be him. The next names on the wounded list were all from the Bone too.
I’ve been trying to work out the formula for who made the list of names on the memorial but there’s no apparent trend to it.

  4. Patrick Flynn, died 28th December 1921 after an unspecified ‘lingering illness’. Not clear whether cause of death is in any way linked to his republican activity.
Irish News sheds no further light on Joseph Burns or James Smith other than what is supplied in the comments above. Note though that Thomas Grey’s death is listed in Brigade documents on militaryarchives.ie (although the documents do not identify volunteers that were killed).
